Principal's Message
Dear Sunnycrest families,
Welcome to another year of learning and growing at Sunnycrest Elementary School! We are so happy to have you with us for the first years of your child’s educational journey. At Sunnycrest, with our Dual Language Spanish program and the majority of our families speaking another language besides English at home, our time in our building is centered around celebrating and growing our language abilities! We are a language learning school, and are proud to show off these skills!
We are one of the largest elementary schools in Federal Way Public Schools, and our walls are bursting with energy, joy, and most important, student educational opportunities. Not only do we value what happens in classrooms for instructional time, we value the ways in which students grow as well rounded human beings. There is always the core content of reading, writing, social studies, science, and math, but we also celebrate instruction around social emotional learning, arts and music, physical education and supports, and STEM through activities, after school programs, and more!
BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES: This school year FWPS will continue to provide basic school materials for every child in the classroom and at school. These items include pencils, erasers, scissors, glue sticks, colored pencils, folders, and notebooks. Please hold on to any back to school supplies you acquire for use at home. If you are looking to provide additional supplies for your child, please make sure they have a backpack and water bottle with their names on it to bring daily. If your child opts to bring their lunch, please help them make sure their lunch bag is also labeled.
SCHOOL MEALS & BREAKFAST IN THE CLASSROOM: Thanks to Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) all students are able to receive breakfast and lunch regardless of free or reduced status. Meal applications are still needed for us to submit information that qualifies for us to continue this program. All meals will also offer a halal option. We are also continuing the Breakfast in the Classroom program, which ensures all students have access to a morning meal as well. Additionally, we are recipients of the Fresh Fruits and Vegetables grant, that allows students to try a different fruit or vegetable for snack each Monday - Thursday beginning in October.
TECHNOLOGY:
Thanks to the recent technology levy, every classroom has a computer cart that allows all scholars to access technology during the school day. To ensure responsible usage, each student will be checked out a device to their student account.
To contact our staff, teachers have access to email and Parent Square, so if you need to reach your child, please call the office, their classroom line, or communicate through Parent Square. This way, students can keep technology devices off at school to prevent further distractions from learning as cell phones are NOT allowed to be used during school hours.
ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL:
Please note, this year we continue with a car loop on the side of the building and bus loop in the parking lot. This has helped our traffic flow immensely since we switched last year so that buses can arrive and depart on time, and we have less car traffic impeding neighborhood traffic. As a reminder, please do not block driveways or intersections if you are in line for the car loop. If you have questions around bus transportation, please notify the office and your child’s teacher.
When kids arrive in the morning, if they are in Kinder and 1st grade they’ll enter the building from the double doors on the side of the school called our “Yellow Doors.” If they are in 2nd - 5th grades, they will enter through the gym. Teachers will pick them up by 9:10 am to take them up for breakfast in the classroom. Early dismissal ends 30 minutes before the dismissal bell. Please do not call for early dismissal between 3:10 - 3:40 on M-TH as well as between 1:55 - 2:25 pm on early release Fridays.
ENROLLMENT VERIFICATION: All families will need to register online at https://www.fwps.org/onlineenrollment to ensure your information is updated. This is for both new and returning scholars. Please complete every year for each child, so we can be sure your information and paperwork is ready to go! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to give us a call at 253.945.4100.
RIGHT AT SCHOOL: For families who need childcare, our partners Right At School offers before/after school care from 6:30 am - 9:00 am and 3:40 pm - 6:00 pm. To register visit https://www.rightatschool.com/program-finder/ or call 1-855-287-2466. Discounts and financial assistance is available. Information can be found at www.ras.news/register.
We look forward to a great new year with you and cannot wait to see you in person!
Sincerely,
Kelley Schottle - Principal
